Printing from Handset Metal Type: We cover the basics of setting metal type and printing: locking the type in a forme, makeready, inking, and presswork. These are the most fundamental skills needed to be a good printer. I talk about best papers for letterpress, degrees of impression into the paper, etc. I go over which presses to buy or to stay away from; tools needed for a basic shop.
I emphasize the craft of printing, and provide the basic knowledge to move forward to learn more. The apprenticeships of yesteryear were at least 5 years, so no single class makes you a printer, but it will set you on the right path, with a good foundation.
